Canada has announced new airport security measures for passengers flying to India. The Canadian government introduced the changes, citing “an abundance of caution” due to rising tensions between the two countries.
New Security Measures for India-Bound Flights
Passengers on flights from Canada to India will now undergo additional security screenings. Air Canada informed its customers about the new protocols, which have already been implemented at multiple airports, including Toronto Pearson International Airport. Travelers have reported longer wait times during pre-boarding checks due to the added security.
These new measures follow a bomb threat in October involving an Air India flight from New Delhi to Chicago. Although the plane was diverted to Iqaluit, Canada, no explosives were found. Additionally, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a Khalistani separatist, made threats against Air India flights, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the 1984 Sikh genocide.
Diplomatic Tensions Prompt the Action
The security measures are part of Canada’s response to a growing diplomatic crisis with India. Relations worsened after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused the Indian government of involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil. India denied these claims, calling them “absurd” and “motivated.”
Moreover, Canada’s Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) recently accused Indian agents of being involved in criminal activities on Canadian soil. These allegations include murder, extortion, and intimidation. In retaliation, both countries expelled top diplomats, escalating the diplomatic standoff.
Key Points:
- Enhanced Security: Canada implements new screening measures for passengers traveling to India.
- Air Canada Alert: Airline customers notified of the new security protocols.
- Security Concerns: Measures follow a bomb threat on an Air India flight and threats from Khalistani leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun.
- Diplomatic Fallout: Relations between Canada and India have deteriorated following accusations of Indian involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
Travelers should arrive at airports at least four hours before their flights to account for longer security delays. Stay updated on any changes by checking with your airline or airport.
