Dell Technologies (DELL.N) has lowered its fourth-quarter revenue forecast. The company projects earnings between $24 billion and $25 billion, below Wall Street’s expectation of $25.57 billion. This forecast reflects ongoing struggles in the personal computer (PC) market.
Despite strong demand for AI-optimized servers, Dell’s PC division continues to face tough competition and weak consumer spending. The company also reported that enterprise customers are being cautious about IT spending in the short term.
PC Market Faces Challenges
The global PC market is experiencing a transition. Many consumers and businesses are shifting toward devices with on-device AI. Analysts believe this trend will solidify in 2025. Dell’s client solutions group, which includes PCs, earned $12.13 billion, missing expectations of $12.43 billion. This is in line with weak forecasts from rivals like HP and Best Buy, who are also seeing slower demand for electronics.
AI Servers Surge Amidst PC Weakness
Dell’s AI-optimized servers are a bright spot. The company reported a record $3.6 billion in AI server orders for Q3. Revenue from its infrastructure solutions group, which includes AI servers, rose by 34% to $11.37 billion, surpassing estimates.
Dell’s COO, Jeff Clarke, expressed confidence, stating, “Interest in our portfolio is at an all-time high, driving record AI server orders and a pipeline that grew more than 50%.”
Cost Pressures from AI Investment
While AI server demand is strong, Dell faces cost pressures. The company has invested heavily in building AI-optimized servers. Higher expenses, combined with competitive pricing, could impact margins. Analysts are watching closely to see how Dell manages these costs.
Q3 Results Miss Expectations
For Q3, Dell reported revenue of $24.37 billion, below the forecasted $24.67 billion. While its AI server business performed well, the PC and consumer divisions underperformed.
Looking Ahead
Dell’s future hinges on how it navigates the shifting PC market while leveraging its strong position in AI infrastructure. The growing demand for AI servers is a positive, but the company must manage challenges in its traditional PC business to stay on track in 2025.
