Domestic Air Passenger Growth: October 2024 Sees Significant Rise in Passenger Numbers

The Indian aviation sector saw a significant rise in domestic air travel in October 2024. Passenger numbers grew by 5.3% compared to last year, reaching 13.6 million, according to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). This growth marks a major recovery for the industry, which is bouncing back from past disruptions.

Market Share Breakdown: Leading Airlines in Domestic Travel

IndiGo remains the market leader, carrying 8.64 million passengers in October 2024. This gives it a market share of 63.3%, far ahead of its competitors. Air India and Vistara follow closely, with 2.65 million and 1.24 million passengers, respectively.

The merger of Air India with Air India Express, which was completed on October 1, 2024, has boosted Air India’s position in the market. Now, Air India Express operates as the budget-friendly wing of the airline. As a result, Air India’s market share increased to 19.4%, while Vistara holds 9.1%.

Tata Group Airlines: A Growing Power in the Domestic Market

The recent merger between Vistara and Air India has consolidated the Tata Group’s presence in the Indian aviation sector. The combined market share of these two airlines reached 28.5% in October, highlighting the significant influence of Tata Group in shaping India’s aviation future.

Other Key Players: SpiceJet and Akasa Air

SpiceJet and Akasa Air also contributed to the growth of domestic air travel. SpiceJet carried 335,000 passengers, while Akasa Air transported 616,000 passengers in October 2024. Their performance indicates the increasing competition in India’s domestic airline industry.

On-Time Performance and Passenger Satisfaction

Airlines have made significant strides in improving their operational efficiency. The major airports of Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad recorded a strong on-time performance rate of 71.9% in October. This improvement in punctuality is critical for enhancing customer satisfaction and ensuring smooth travel experiences.
