Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India is launching its first electric scooter today, November 27, 2024. Known as the Honda Activa Electric, this scooter marks the brand’s entry into India’s growing electric two-wheeler market. The launch is part of Honda’s strategy to introduce 30 electric two-wheelers globally by 2030.
While the official name hasn’t been confirmed, the scooter has been widely referred to as the “Honda Activa Electric” in media reports. The teaser video released by Honda showcases its sleek design and features. The scooter will come with dual swappable batteries, powered by Honda’s Mobile Power Pack technology, allowing quick battery swaps at designated stations.
What Makes the Honda Activa Electric Stand Out?
- Dual Swappable Batteries: The Activa Electric features a dual battery system, enabling fast swaps. This technology ensures minimal downtime and is especially useful in cities with limited charging infrastructure.
- Range: The scooter is expected to cover 104 km on a single charge in Standard mode. Although the range for Sport mode isn’t confirmed, it will likely offer a boost in performance.
- Display Options: There will be two variants. The base model will feature a basic TFT display, while the higher trim will offer a multi-color screen with added features like turn-by-turn navigation and music control.
- Full LED Lighting & Safety: The scooter will include a full LED lighting setup, featuring a headlight, taillight, and turn indicators. It will also come with alloy wheels and front disc brakes, paired with rear drum brakes for better safety.
- Design: The design is sleek and minimalist, likely inspired by the Honda CUV e: concept. The swingarm-mounted motor will ensure better weight distribution and handling.
Charging and Battery Options
The Activa Electric will offer both traditional charging through an onboard charger and battery swapping. Additionally, battery subscription models might be available, allowing customers to purchase the scooter without the battery pack and rent it instead. This option could make the scooter more affordable initially.
Price and Market Position
Expected to be priced at Rs 1.20 lakh (ex-showroom), the Honda Activa Electric will compete with other top electric scooters in the market, such as the Ola S1, TVS iQube, Bajaj Chetak, Ather Riza, and Hero Vida V1. Its competitive pricing and advanced features will make it a strong contender in the electric two-wheeler segment.
Honda’s entry into this market brings a promising combination of innovation, technology, and affordability. As electric scooters become more popular, the Honda Activa Electric is poised to make a significant impact.
