Sourav Ganguly Backs Jasprit Bumrah as Potential Leader for India in First Test vs Australia

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has expressed confidence in Jasprit Bumrah to lead the Indian team in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy opener against Australia in Perth. With regular captain Rohit Sharma expected to miss the series opener due to personal commitments, Bumrah, who was appointed vice-captain, is set to step into the leadership role for the first Test.

Bumrah’s Leadership Qualities Shine Through

Ganguly, known for his leadership acumen, lauded Bumrah’s involvement and cricketing mindset, saying, “From what I have seen of him, he looks involved, reads the game well, and bowls in the right areas under pressure in white-ball cricket, which shows he is thinking the right things.” The 30-year-old pace spearhead has earned praise for his consistency and ability to perform in pressure situations, making him a natural leader in Ganguly’s eyes.

Bumrah’s leadership credentials were already tested when he captained India in England during the 2022 series in Birmingham. Now, with Rohit Sharma unavailable for the first Test, Bumrah’s role as the captain becomes pivotal. KL Rahul, who was moved to the opening slot during India’s intra-squad match at WACA, is expected to fill in during Rohit’s absence.

Bumrah’s Key Role in India’s Pace Attack

Ganguly further emphasized that Bumrah’s leadership will not only be crucial with the bat but also in leading India’s pace attack. “He will be the leader of that attack, and in good bowling conditions, he can have a defining impact on the series,” Ganguly added. Bumrah’s ability to lead the pace charge in Perth could be a game-changer in this high-stakes Test series.
